First Golden Blooms

This is the Sonsawar. Aka Ganer or Buttercup Tree. Cochlospermum religiosum of the Bixaceae  family. It is seen on the tekdis (hills) in Pune and extending some distance southwards. It doesn't grown in Pune City either.

According to my teacher in the Field Botany course, it's one of the first to bloom after winter.

True to that, last week, I was blessed to see these gorgeous golden flowers on Vetal Tekdi. Even on the tekdis, the species likes certain areas and is not seen everywhere.
However this  particular tree is part of a deliberate citizen -led tree plantation drive.

The flowers develop into large oval reddish brown fruit that burst to reveal silky cotton. It's palmately lobed leaves are very beautiful as well.

I had written about this species in 2021.. do click here to see more photographs.

This is my first post in the New Year. Happy 2026 everyone. Hope it brings health, happiness, travel and lots of trees!

I am joining Parul in her ThursdayTreeLove bloghop. Do head over to see fantastic trees from around the world. Better still, join in!
