Root Pearls (ThursdayTreeLove)

Here's another tree from my travels.

Actually, it was my husband who pointed it out to me !! 🤦🏼 I guess he has become an inadvertent tree spotter!

Sadly I could not identify it.

We saw this tree growing by the roadside - rather it's unique roots caught the eye.  This was in Annapolis, USA in early Dec 2021. The authorities had left space for these lovely roots  when constructing the footpath. Which meant they had space to grow and breathe.

Maybe it is a species of Cyperus. Or the root pearls are some symbiotic colonies in another species.

The tree was almost leafless and the few green leaves were too high to help ID the species.

Either way, the bare tree demanded attention which we gladly gave it!  Knowing it's name would be great but it doesn't really matter.

To me it is the Root Pearl tree!

What do you think? Have you seen a tree like this?

I am joining Parul in her ThursdayTreeLove bloghop. Do head over to see fantastic trees from around the world. Better still, join in!

I've seen roots (but not with extensive knots like in your picture) in some of our trees. I wonder if this tree has some kind of nematode infestation? I am far from an expert. There is a forestry school in Syracuse, NY that might be able to answer your question. SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry

I have never seen roots like this, but I'll be looking more closely. There's always something new to be discovered!

Very strikingly different from anything that I've seen around where I live or even on any of my travels! Would love to know the name of this tree, for sure. Thanks for sharing this unusual tree.

Cheers,
Esha
